4 - Part 2 - Task 2 - Sounds Objects Make

Task 2

Reading Comprehension and Writing

You will read the short text below. As you do it, answer these questions: What is happening? What is the situation?

But before that...

Close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you. Can you describe them?

OK, now read the text below.

A Day in the Life

"Beep, beep, beep!" was everything I did not hear coming from my alarm clock that morning. "That’s odd," I thought to myself as bells began to ring  in the distance. "Oh, NO! Those are the church bells. It means it’s noon! It means I’m late!"

I got up and when I opened the window, the curtains flapped and the bedroom door slammed! The wind was howling outside and I could tell a storm was about to burst. I rushed to the bathroom, splashed some water on my face - no time for a shower! Or breakfast.

As soon as I got in the car, my phone started buzzing inside my bag, but I couldn’t find it! I could hear my keys jingling but couldn’t find the phone! It took me a while to finally find it inside my packed bag, but then of course it stopped ringing! So, I left but not before turning the radio on and realizing it wasn’t working! The only music I could hear all the way from home to work came from the cars honking and the radio hissing. What a way to start a day!

So, What is happening? What is the situation?

Now, read the text again and do tasks A and B.

Task 2 (A)

In the text, there are many words that describe the sounds. Can you identify them?

Explain what they mean in your Padlet. Choose one of these three forms:

  • upload an audio with the sound;
  • write a definition;
  • upload an image that illustrates it.

Task 2 (B)

Using the previous text as an example, tell a short story using the sounds objects make.

You can:

  • record yourself saying it along with the sounds
  • make a short video about it
  • write a short story

Post your story on Padlet.

Knowledge Pill: learning vocabulary

Did you know that before we incorporate a new word into our everyday vocabulary, we need to use it a few times so our brain "gets used to it?"

With that in mind, refer back to your answers inTask 2(A) and use the dictionaries and writing tools we worked with previously in the course. Pick some expressions to use in your story and expand your vocabulary. Here’s a list to help you: Sounds Made by Objects.

Have fun!
